GAPING HOLE
Our ongoing Covid crisis has been a time of unspeakable loss. The numbers are impossible to fathom. Around Thanksgiving of 2020, we started hearing phrases like “empty place at the table” or “the holidays won’t be the same this year.” I began to think about profound loss and how that alters a family, reverberating for generations. Since the beginning of the pandemic, I have been making work using family photographs, questioning what the photograph is telling me and altering them as a way to make meaning for me. How does it speak about loss? I look for ways to come to terms with that in my work. People are with us and then they are not. Life is fragile. They can be erased from a photograph so easily. Is that a metaphor for real life? Perhaps it is.
